Myia Hughes

Director
TRIO Future Educator Success Program
Western Michigan University

I've been part of the TRIO SSS program and been a MI-CAPP member since 2011. Being a member of MI-CAPP gives my students an opportunity to apply for additional scholarships that there other peers on campus are not able to. Each year, I have had at least one MI-CAPP scholarship recipient and we've had the honor to attend banquets so that our students can accept the award. It has also been an honor to be part of the MI-CAPP scholarship committee because it allows me to understand the challenges and obstacles that these amazing students have overcome. Lastly, being a MICAPP member builds amazing relationships with other TRIO professionals which allows us to lean on each other to continue creating opportunities for our students.

Cindy Cowell

Director
TRIO Student Support Services
Finlandia University

Hello! I am Cindy Cowell, Director of TRIO SSS at Finlandia University in Hancock, MI! I first became a member of MI-CAPP in February of 1987. I kiddingly call this period of my TRIO career my “second tour of duty.” I stepped away from “traditional” work for about 10 years in 2005, but was fortunate to return to TRIO and Finlandia University in July 2014. I immediately re-joined MICAPP at that time.

I mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say that I am the professional that I am today due to my high level of engagement with MI-CAPP, EOA and COE. 24 years of professional development, peer mentoring by other MI-CAPP members, strong networks and leadership opportunities cannot be matched without membership in MI-CAPP.

The opportunities and experiences that MI-CAPP provides for our students are unparalleled also. It is amazing to watch our students gain pride, a sense of belonging and leadership skills when we attend the Student Leadership Summit every year. Our SSS team knows that once a student travels to SLS with us, they are TRIO through and through. As a result of the Summit, our students stand up tall and own their skills and leadership abilities. We see these students become ambassadors for our program and take on leadership roles at our university.

You as a professional and person, your program, and your students will be stronger and more effective through your membership and engagement with all that MI-CAPP has to offer.

MI-CAPP has been inspirational in providing TRiO programs with a wealth of information throughout the 50 years and during their annual conferences.  The Executive Board and members have guided us through policies, finances, strategic planning and advocacy on law-making decisions.  Our TRiO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is proud to be a member of MI-CAPP, EOA, and COE!
